From New York to Chicago

Getting back on the bike After having staid in New Jersey for a couple of days to wait for some spare parts we were able to get back into our riding schedule and headed towards Pennsylvania. We knew that some parts of the US we were going to cross will be rural and some things would work differently there but when we suddenly started seeing horse carriages instead of cars; that was kind of surprising.

Spain-Portugal-New York

It has been a while since our last blog post… Bad weather, some technical issues as well as some logistical challenges have kept us pretty busy in the last two weeks. Straight road in spain Through Spain to Portugal So let’s begin where I stopped last time. We cycled along the Spanish coast until we reached Valencia. From there on, we went inland where we conquered quite some hills on the way and had to stop one more day at a camping site due to heavy wind and rain.

Hail and storm at the spanish coast

After having crossed the border between France and Spain as part of our night ride that was already announced in our latest blog entry we are now cycling south along the Mediterranean Sea coast. The roads here in Catalonia are wider than they were in France and the tarmac is more cyclist friendly as well! Departure for the night ride While crossing Girona we got stopped by the local police who first were just curious and wanted to take pictures but later insisted on checking whether our trailer was not too wide to be road legal in Spain (Spoiler: it is not).

To my surprise there is little to no free time and always something to do. I had imagined to cycle for the day, repair a bit and chill for the last few hours.

Our bike in detail

Building a solarbike that is able to get us trough all kinds of terrain and weather on a more than 20'000 km journey must be planed accurately. In the following sections I will guide you through our decision process regarding the components. Caution: It is detailed and nerdy so if you don’t care too much about the reasons why we use these parts and just want to know the stats the table below shows the most important informations.

How It Started

Zurich to Zurich - how it all started One day the youtube algorithm suggested Johannes a video of a guy cycling from France to China on an electric bike. The bike was powered by solarpanels mounted on a trailer that harvest enough energy to increase the possible daily range of a touring bike easily by a factor of two to three. “If France to China in two months is possible with such a bike, one should be able to make it around the globe in six”
